these images are a couple of weeks old, having been taken on 25 November as part of location scouting for another project.  I have no idea why I didn't get around to posting them then but late is, one hopes, better than never.

... but it might have been.  this cottage came on the market about a year before this one and I looked at it several times, deciding in the end not to put in an offer.  it was a difficult choice.  my hesitancy had nothing to do with its location or charm, which it had and has and in abundance.  the problem was that I figured I could afford --just barely -- the purchase, but not any of the work it was clearly going to need.  structurally it was more than a little intimidating. 

so others bought it and I'm glad they did because they are precisely the sort of intelligent and interesting people the Grove is lucky to attract.  we're all better off for their presence and participation in the community. 

that was on the order of 18 years ago.  by now I can't imagine living anywhere other than here on the Circle.

another image in the continuing irregular Grove cottage porch series. 

this cottage is the smallest in the Grove and is considered the oldest.  somewhere along the way the front doors have been blocked off so nowadays the porch is used only by cats; nonetheless it is an excellent example of early Grove porch design.  Bittersweet Cottage is among the many whose porches once looked like this but were since expanded. 

note that the outer posts are square section while the ones at the L rear were turned on a lathe and have decorative brackets.

it doesn't have a sign but historically this is Sunset Cottage.  it looks across Grove Avenue and Chapel Park, from which this was taken in order to include the white hydrangeas.

having made it back to the Grove in time for the annual children's egg hunt, there was also time to see what had happened over the three nights I'd been gone.  quite a bit, apparently.

Bittersweet Cottage garden

this forsythia seemed to have a garnish in the form of a traditional fleur-de-lys.
