O how my mother would have enjoyed this ...
It was from encountering Treasure Island at a young and impressionable age that she became besotted for life by pirates. So much so that (as my father observed) she even married one.

the kids do seem to be enjoying their visit. the day trip up to New York seems to have missed its primary objective but it would appear that they visited other sites of equal interest; certainly there weren't any complaints from the tired but happy travelers who returned that night.
yesterday featured an event important to and anticipated by them, though one whose advent I had been oblivious: the opening of the 3rd pirate movie.
so we all went.
as did others: many of whom appeared in at least some piratical garb.
it was interesting to see how far the amusement park ride has taken the film series it spawned, such that it appears to have moved beyond conventional notions of plot, sequence, and the like. but lots of special effects: as the credits rolled by it seemed that the two most populated categories were "digital artist" and "stunts".

tomorrow is International Talk Like a Pirate Day. it was also my mother's birthday, but that's not a problem as she was always a deep aficionada of all things piratical (exposure at a tender age to the works of Robert Louis Stevenson will do that, though these days I suppose that the Disney organisation has largely supplanted that source for the purpose).
but it's also our weekly Hatha yoga instruction in the Town Hall, on which I depend for balance and for holding together the world. so I have been wondering what will happen when the session falls on the annual day set aside for the coarser side of nautical dialect:

it is a foregone conclusion that any joint enterprise involving Kellogg's and the Disney Co. will be an unholy alliance. so while on a run to the market for additional floor treatment supplies on seeing Johnny Depp's face gazing out from a box marked as piratical provisions I did what any sensible person would do and bought it immediately. not for personal consumption, mind you, but as a gift, a gift for a pirate-besotted little boy (in his fifties, but never mind that) who I expect to be delighted to receive it.
impulse marketing at its best.
just the thing to start off a day of buccaneering, right?
bit of an upgrade from hardtack, eh what?
(as a Disney stockholder I stand to benefit from any sales of this product. now that's some real piracy for you)

the painters showed up early and in force and a rum lot o' scalawags they were, too.
in the spirit of the day one can look at this cat cam view and either see them as climbing the ladders to scrape and paint or scurrying up the ratlines to scupper and pillage.
