roses in the afternoon
[OT from cottage renovations]
down on Chestnut Avenue this English rose is blooming with a wild abandon. afternoon sweetlight seems to bring out the best in its flowers so I made a point of being there to try to take advantage of the felicitous combination.

back at home the same light came streaming through Mrs Carter Emmons' rose bush (previously noted in entry for 13 June 2005). I believe it to be same variety.

(Would you be open to any requests from someone asking if they could paint one of them, by any chance? If not, that is totally cool, as I understand completely. Some people don't mind, some do, but I *always* ask, as the photograph is a piece of art in and of itself as well.)

no problem, I would be delighted.
images in this journal are scaled down to a max of 1024x768; do let me know if you would like one at original resolution to work with/from.
although it's been over a year since I made a decision to put time and effort into photography, I don't consider myself an artist. if pressed I would come up with something between "technician" and "historian". I've a long way to go before what I do could make it to the level of Art.

What kind of camera do you use?

it's a Nikon D70S; which I've had for about a year now. technically it's a leap (or two, or three) past the Sony DCS-P1 pocket camera it replaced, but some of my better images were taken before I upgraded. decent gear is a tremendous advantage, one which I would never willingly forsake, but being in the right place at the right time and one's outlook are more important IMHO.

bamboo walker,
they're on Chestnut Road, in the yard of the house next to chez Time Travelers. they are lovely at any time but for the soft, streaming light seen in these images it's best to be there late in the afternoon, say an hour before sunset. don't put it off too long, they won't be at their peak much longer.
from your place it's just a few steps off the route to the Post Office.
