heading over for a market run, and just as I'm getting to the crossing: bells sound, lights flash and down come the gates.  errands can always wait when there's a train!

eastbound autoracks, pretty routine for the Metropolitan Subdivision.  but they are the optimal visual and auditory embellishment for an afternoon whose weather has been nothing short of perfect. 

yes, Virginia, there is such a thing as an aesthetic of railroading.

along the railroad maintenance forces have been out replacing rail, not all at once (that was done some years ago the last time a system production gang came through) but here and there as needed.  a pile of the old rails has appeared next to the crossing.

these ends have interesting patterns of colour and texture which there was just enough afternoon light to bring out.

it almost looks like these sections were making an effort to blend in with the fallen oak leaves.
