test paint

in the continuing and foolish hope that the painters will ever produce an estimate and then actually show up to do the work of surface prep, priming and application of finish coat, by way of confirming colour choices I acquired and applied a bit of finish paint to a couple of test sections.

test paint - wall
test paint on (portions of) wall and porch ceiling ...

test paint - deck
... and on deck and trim

the final choices are:

- porch ceiling: light blue
 (SW  6773  )
- walls:  pale yellow
 (SW  6687  )
- windows, doors, pediment, porch columns and framing:  white
- other trim: dark green
 (SW  6454  )
- porch deck: grey
 (SW  6234  )

if the work ever gets done the results really will look quite attractive.

George,
Do you have to go with what was used previously? How about something used less frequently in the Grove? I suggest Light Sage Green for the body, a creamy Off-white trim, Mango in the porch ceiling- now that would be uplifting like the glow of the sun, Medium to a dark-medium Putty for the porch floor and lively Charcoal Grey for other trim. Also select some special areas for a little of FLW's Cherokee Red which is tilted toward the orange side. Wow and yummy! Tricia

it is a real delight to hear from you but it does make me regret all the more that you and Pete moved away (come back!  all is forgiven).  esp. before you had the chance to take the work you were doing on your place a little further, such as the exterior colours.

I have tried to use the hints left in the structure by previous owners and what others have done with their Grove cottages for guidance rather than strict specifications.  to the extent that what happens here can be consistent with previous usage, it helps with the "turning back the clock" aspect, but elements such as pedimented cat doors and webcam windows aren't quite historically correct and do take the cottage in new directions.

sky blue for the porch ceiling is, as far as I can tell, new to the place but it's a usage I have always favoured.  tradition has it that it serves to discourage flying or nesting insects, or that it wards off evil spirits (see www.smithsonianmag.si.edu/smithsonian/issues00/apr00/images/porch_jpg.html (http://www.smithsonianmag.si.edu/smithsonian/issues00/apr00/images/porch_jpg.html)).

interestingly enough, Mimi went with something pretty close to mango for her porch ceiling, along with some other colour choices that took a bit of getting used to but which now seem to come tother rather well.  next time y'all are here you will have to stop by there to take a look.

We'll have to ask Mimi if Mango attracts flies. Yes, I had lots of plans for the outside of 103 Grove like restoring the pergola, spire, barge boards and pendant and adding a bay window eat-in, in the kitchen. An improved rear entry, garage, and car park area. I get did get rid of the blue shutters though. Too storybook for me. The gloss yellow on the stucco was sprayed on there very thick by a previous painter. Not sure we can afford the Grove anymore but with a grandchild on the way, we may wish we could. Love your cat door. Does it have a flipper door? I designed one at the bottom of the steps in our basement there but had trouble getting some of the cats to use it. Ever get a racoon coming in? I would need to insulate an outside one well if I did one here in Iowa. Has anything happened to the abandoned house on Macauley? T.
