[OT from cottage renovations]

the Virginia bluebells are nearing the end of their run.  it's been a good year for them but not a great one; certainly they've done better in the past.

a couple of warm days and some hard rain seems to have been enough to trigger their internal kill cycle.  stems are beginning to droop outward and the blossoms are shifting colour and starting to fall away, leaving behind the seeds in which next year's hopes are stored.

even though they can't last forever, I'm always sad to see them go.  they didn't hang around as long this year as they have in the past but their time, however long or short it may have been, is always the best part of the year for me.
