[OT from cottage renovations]

this much diffusion of light takes away contrast but replaces it with subtlety.

[OT from cottage renovations]

yesterday afternoon brought mixed light and rain, out into which I ventured on a random course leading to McCathran Hall, the Parsonage grounds, Center Street and the East Woods.  it was in the latter that I got caught in a passing cloudburst, dashing through its onset across the woods to borrow the use of [livejournal.com profile] m_lightfoot's porch *.

back tracing my steps I found the coming and going of the rain and the return of sunlight had changed much of what I saw, and many of the images might find use in some future study.

Parsonage grounds, Chestnut Road and Center Street

this one was the one I liked the most, enough so that there really wasn't much point in posting any others from the same outing.

ordinarily I wouldn't be such a wuss about a little rain, but didn't want to be taking any chances with the camera gear.  but sure enough the following morning I woke up with chills and a clear feeling of having caught something.  it will pass, though, and I'm happy to have taken this image.  a fair trade, I think.

image would have gone up last night but Verizon was on another denial-of-bandwidth kick, one that lasted 12 hours.  damn the 'phone company and all who sail in her.

this forsythia is bursting onto the scene with a dazzling splash of colour.  behind and above it the trees are budding and will be leafing out soon.  to the L can be seen one of the old water pumps from early Camp Meeting days.  it's good we've since gone beyond that to city water, and even better that the Grove retains so much of its natural beauty.

it's better to be thankful for it than than envious of how the scraggly little forsythias in a certain cottage garden compare to this specimen.  while the show lasts I can walk over and look at it any time.

the personal significance of the phrase "no light" is that it was the Wonder Boy's first words, uttered many years ago.  when they're little you'd think they'll never stop talking, but in the late 'teens and early 20s the challenge is to get them to say anything at all.

O.K., enough with the maundering.
time to get on with today's images, taken with very little light.

Bittersweet Cottage garden

during the warmer first phase of winter this butterfly bush out front had put forth some early foliage which isn't in all that bad shape, considering.

the more recent temperatures don't seem to have caused any great harm.  it's seen here this afternoon against some of the last bits of the snow, which this evening's rain should help clear away.

Parsonage grounds

there wasn't much in the way of light left when I stepped out, and the arrival of heavily laden rain clouds did nothing to lighten the sky.

this image, so dark and creepily ominous, contains so little colour that toggling between greyscale and colour mode in PS has no effect.  it is fortunate that my mood has been better than this image might suggest.
