some calendar progress
[OT from cottage renovations]
took yesterday off work to focus on the calendar:
- called the printer to discuss requirements.
calendar will be 11x17 (he said: "for a job like this you can't afford our larger press", an assertion I saw no reason to challenge).
detailed proposal is on its way in the mail. - downloaded 234 Mb of Adobe bloatware; installed it and and its updates and mocked up a trial in order to work through the initial exasperation factor inevitable with any new-and-different software, particularly if it's been ported from planet Mac.
- deleted the mockup and started over, completing basic layout and typography.
verify 2007 lunar phase dates -- some of the ones in the initial boilerplate don't look right.done.- install higher end photo software (images so far have all been destined for the web, but now it's time to get serious and work with the raw image data)
- review/tweak/accept proposal from printer. unit cost and size of press run remain undetermined.
- add images and captions, getting things just right.
- ship it off, having scraped up a few kilobucks to pay for the press run. unfortunately the recently-upgraded sofa hasn't accumulated any coins under its cushions.
during which time, figure out distribution. folks have indicated interest but it has to have a way to get into their hands.
how obvious it must be that I've never done this before.

yesterday's light was intermittently good, tending toward excellent in the afternoon but I resolved to stay on task and didn't let it lure me out. I did, however, take the time to clean some filth out of the camera innards. dust spots are software correctible but prevention is a better strategy.
comic relief came in the form of two calls from the office.

uh, no.
in, I guess, the spirit of the film Calendar Girls (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0337909/), the Woman's Club has been talking about publishing a calendar featuring their husbands and SOs in various Grove settings. there is historical precedent: years ago, long before I ever got here, there was a Playgirl calendar with some (or all?) months shot in the Grove. I have actually agreed to do the photography for this iteration of it but the project doesn't seem to have gotten much of anywhere.
so I guess the Bittersweet Cottage 2007 Grove calendar will be a disappointment: just botanical subjects, most of which have already appeared in this space over the past year or so at a much lower resolution.
