reddening dogs

[OT from cottage renovations]

it's October, and as one might expect the dogwoods are leading the leaf parade.  morning light shows the patterns of change to advantage.

Great light. Love the first shot.

thank you.  I'm always gratified when anything in this space pleases somebody.

I included the first image for light and texture and the second one for overlay and shadow.  that I didn't find a way to capture both effects in a single frame shows that I still have a ways to go (this time around my excuse is distraction from entertaining and house guests).

Entertaining that early in the morning?

the rerefenestration rededication had been the previous day.  my brother and his SO had flown in from Southern California for the event and stayed over.

Will you be posting photos of the ceremony?

I would have if I had taken any.  but for once I was more participant than observer/recorder.

you had your chance to be there -- the event was noted in this space a month out in order to give all concerned time to make arrangements.  or excuses.

frankly, there wasn't time for taking pictures (yeah, I know, "it only takes 1/125 sec so what's the big deal?").  but there was lots of cleaning and straightening up ahead of time, food and drink to lay in, prepare, and then bring forth and keep replenished during the event (the oven stayed on at 400°f for several real time batches of mushroom turnovers and manitaropita), directions to give on the 'phone to inbound guests unfamiliar with the peculiarities of the Grove, and house tours to conduct for those who didn't self-guide, etc. etc.

I don't suppose that you could get various neighbors and perfect strangers to re-enact the ceremony for purposes of posterity?

At the very least, consider a claymation representation.

re-enactment

there is an excellent chance for a recurrence next year.  I have already had it explained to me by some of the guests that the event has now become an annual tradition.

in the Grove we take tradition seriously; I know better than to even think about messing with it.

Your comment prompts a question from me, and I ask because I sense that the Grove is a community that's (A) small and (B) insular. In such cases, an outsider is not (usually) readily accepted. Consequently, how did you - a transplant from California - manage to fit in so seamlessly?

transplant

[identity profile] 15-the-circle.livejournal.com 2006-10-03 05:01 pm (UTC)(link)

I moved back East in '79, to Maryland in '80 and to the Grove in  '90.  the family moved a lot when I was a kid, so California was a pleasant enough place but not the only one I have ever considered home.

Did the Grove accept you with open arms?

perhaps I should defer to my neighbours, some of whom have been known to read this space now and then though few have LJ accounts and almost nobody ever comments.

the Grove has a reputation for attracting and harbouring eccentrics, which strikes me as odd because I don't actually know any Grovers who might qualify in that regard and of course all of us are completely normal.  but, in theoretical terms, if it happened that there were any eccentrics in the Grove, and furthermore if I happened to be one too, then perhaps I would feel very much at home and fit right into the place.  theoretically, mind you.

I am crestfallen; I moved to the Grove specifically to consort with eccentrics...dear neighbor, can you not identify at least one? Otherwise, I'll have to pack up and leave.

To the question 'did the Grove welcome you with open arms'--given the crowd that attended the Rerefenestration Rededication, I'd say the answer is a resounding youbetcha!
