lost gingerbread
in a comment on this morning's posting,
peach_salsa mentioned cottage gingerbread and in a reply I had described the cottage that once stood to the other side of no. 13 next door (it was gone long before I first came to the Grove; I know it only through historical records).
these images from the Town archives show it in greater detail.

15, 13, 11 the Circle
c. 1940s
c. 1957
the second image was taken shortly before the 3rd cottage was torn down.

Your cottage is fascinating. About how many square feet is it? How long have you lived there?

these places were quite unfashionable at that time. you couldn't give them away ... there were some Grove cottages that owners walked away from rather than pay the taxes on them (and the taxes didn't amount to much).
it is said that no. 11 was in bad shape, basically falling apart. it wasn't considered worth the bother of fixing it up.

less the modern addition out back that I'm planning on subtracting, it's 14 ft. wide and 74 ft. long.

16 years; since 1990.

vestiges
somebody asked in an email whether any visible remnants of no. 11 can be found on the Circle. the only extant trace of it is a line of bricks set into the ground where the edge of its front walk used to be.
