the last shingle
the S wall is now clear of shingles.
and true to form, it is revealing yet another combination of material and finish.

past the tar paper middle section, the E end/lower level has a different pattern of tongue and groove boards. these are uniform in width but substantially wider than ones found in the interior, and have a bead down the middle and along one edge.
I don't believe this to be original siding material. the boards are not long enough to reach from bottom to top; some are lapped and others come together in a butt joint. most likely they were pulled from this or another cottage and set in place as substrate for the shingles. nonetheless I am pleased with the find and intend to leave them in place. it's going to take some TLC but the result will be worth it.
butt joint
lapped
and now for another look at that first sentence: the S wall is now clear of shingles. come the end of next month the rerefenestration rededication now has another intermediate step to celebrate.
