the picture of the picture
much of the focus of this week's activity is the work on the S wall: removal of outer layers, inspection of the framing and insulation behind them, installation of new siding to match the historic material and replacement of the aluminium frame self-storing storm windows and screens with the wooden ones that have been fabricated.
also happening is the design of a trim piece to replace the one whose paint shadow was left behind when the old old upper front window was replaced with the old new one. here's what it looked like when freshly deshingled last summer:
trim detail - July 2005
the trim carpenter asked for a visual aid in the form of a blowup of this image, scaled to 24 inches between the centre lines of the next-to-outer loops at the bottom. it came to eight overlapping 8½x11 sheets which when laid out on the porch looked like this:
blowup - 1,010.526%
the horizontal white line visible across the bottom tier of sheets is a scaling line edited into the image to calibrate against the desired 24 inches.
