(I can get away with this because I've never identified the day job in this space)
to describe today as an eventful day at the office would be a tremendous understatement.  never before in my professional career have we:

  • lost the domain
  • had a server room fire

that's right, we lost the domain.  for an online company it's completely unthinkable.  it would be like having a bank miss its payroll, or if the Mint were to run out of pennies, or, or, ...

that's right, a server room fire.  just one component, and I was in there and managed to get it disconnected from electrical power and though I hustled it off the floor it was a damn shame that I resisted the temptation to chuck it into the duck pond.  it would have been unkind to them.

we're going to have one heck of a time topping this come next week.

It all sounds like some kind of omens to me!

one of our customers who happens to know my home email noticed the disappearance of our corporate web page.  here's the message exchange:

I haven't had the nerve to tell him about the fire.  yet.

perchance the fireish incident was 'just a warmup' ?

a true bastard would be thinking 'is it the insurance money they're after, or an excuse to consolidate localish spaces?'

tee hee.  warm indeed.
even without a direct identification of the outfit I really don't want to say much more in this space, but will admit to having more than a little concern about our DR preparedness.  one never has as much of it as one would like.

as it happens I don't really have enough information to be in a position to comment on such speculations.  that would only come from somebody who has been obsessing on The Office (http://www.bbc.co.uk/comedy/guide/articles/o/officethe_66602660.shtml) or spending too much time reading the Register's ongoing tech soap opera (http://www.theregister.co.uk/odds/bofh) where I finally learned about BOFH.

well, actually, no, I am not personally expecting much of an impact.  it all happened at our corporate HQ and at the company's overseas former HSP, which is also where the fix will have to happen.

our local piece of the enterprise is all still up and running (uh, less one burned-out and at this point very much former power strip, that is) under our pre-merger domain.  good thing we weren't so efficient at consolidating.

they managed to get the domain back this morning, fortunately before much of the inbound mail in transit timed out.  senders would have gotten warning messages, though, and outbound mail might have been tagged as spam on account of domain lookup failure and autodeleted.

the outage doesn't seem to have made any news sources or blogs that I could get to in a quick check.
