it's about the light

[OT from cottage renovations]

there's a bit of morning light that comes streaming past the N side of the place and right through the porch, falling onto the front garden.  I happened to catch it out of the corner of my eye while trying to do something else and had just enough time to get camera into position for this quick image before a cloud moved into the sunbeam's path.  a few minutes later the cloud was gone but so was this patch of sun as the pattern of light and shadow had already moved on.

this image isn't really about the hydrangea; rather, it's about the quality of the morning light.  I really don't know how well it captures and conveys it, but with any luck it does so at least to some extent.

which is to say, a row of three hydrangeas across the front edge of the porch and the lower trunk of the crabapple tree.

except that I was a couple of seconds too late; by the time I tripped the shutter the cloud had already started to obscure the patch of sun, so the effect is a bit muted (and on a dimmed-out crap monitor in the office it's even more subdued).

though I will admit to liking the way the foreground serrated leaf edge cuts across the flower cluster, an effect not noticeable in the thumbnail but visible in the higher-res versions of the image.

I see why you keep your camera handy: You have lots of starlets on that garden stage of yours.

this time of the summer the hydrangeas pretty much have centre stage all to themselves.  there's one daylily out back -- a volunteer, new this year -- as well as the begonias in window box and half barrel and the impatiens out along the front walk.  the only other annuals are the the hanging baskets on the porch, and they didn't do very well while I was out in Salt Lake City though a couple of them will probably pull through.

this has been a good year for the hydrangeas.  with the show they are putting on there's no real need for much of anything else to be in bloom.  it would just be a distraction.
