managed to catch up with the Excellent Trim Carpenter this morning. he reports having finished fabrication of the sidelights for the new/old upper front window. frames for the storms and screens are complete; he is now moving on to painting them and having the glass cut at a supplier (whose name I didnt' recall) over by the airpark. double pane thermal glass will be an excellent measure against heat loss but those things aren't going to be light.
I asked him to give some thought to putting together a rack to hold whatever set isn't in immediate use. it will end up under the yet-to-be-built N side walkway but it might come in handy when he gets to the point of hauling these things down from his shop.

it depends on what's getting done, and who's doing it. if the work involves exploration of wall interiors or is likely to raise some sort of question about what to do / how to proceed I make a strong effort to be there for it. the porch cam (http://www.pacerfarm.org/cam.htm) is helpful for remote monitoring but it has its limitations.
last year during the porch rebuilding I didn't hang around and ended up regretting it. when it came time to do the façade rebuilding what I did was to work at home until the builders knocked off, typically around 3 pm, after which I would head into the office to cover whatever I hadn't been able to get done by 'phone/email. we're under new management now and I'm not sure to what extent (or even whether) it will be possible to get away with it this year.
if/when the demolition/rebuilding of the back half of the place gets going I plan to install another webcam, looking out from the back window of the upstairs cottage front.

I have a neighbor who told me last week he was going to be away for two weeks out of state. He asked me to keep an eye on their place, and that there was supposed to be someone working on putting up an overhang over their porch. We are closing in on the end of their second week away and I haven't seen anyone working on it.
