fabrication

[for once, not OT from cottage renovations]

the Excellent Trim Carpenter has been busy fabricating screen and storm window frames in his shop; he has also gotten a good start on the new upper front window.  this morning he brought one of each size for a sanity check against apertures, as well as the upper front window mocked into a frame.  he is rebuilding the latter out of old window components that were on hand, from which ripply old glass will also be reused.

I do have to admit to a certain perverse satisfaction with the notion of replacing aluminum frame storm-and-screen sets with these wooden framed ones which will combine the older design with contemporary, thermally efficient glass.  old tech doesn't have to be low tech.

Ripply old glass! I love it!

(This comment may not make much sense to me later. I'm all wonky from altered sleep.)

not at all.  ripply old glass always makes sense.  even the little catcam window has it.

Do you suppose that you might ever put a picture up of the entire cottage? It's risky to some degree. But the photographic nuggets of your progressive restoration process has me imagining the overall before-and-after.

I sometimes think you live in a hobbit shire.

there isn't any risk involved, but it can be quite difficult to get the entire cottage into a single view -- lot size/confguration, adjacent structures and vegetation combine to block any decent sight lines of the whole thing.  the userpic icons are, I'm sure, way too small:

but maybe the following, taken in April and October of last year, can convey some idea of the W façade, which has been the focus of the work undertaken so far.

funny you should say that.  my parents used to call this place a hobbit house.  the usage was not quite correct -- no hobbit would be comfortable in a house as tall as this one -- but as for conveying the general impression they were right on.

Well! That do beat all!

Your cottage looks so inviting, I've a mind to cover it in gingerbread and read children's books to any willing audience out on the front steps. (And I don't even like kids that much.)

the renovations have consisted equally of undoing previous work and turning back the clock on the one hand and trying to let the place become the cottage it has been wanting/trying to be on the other.  one of the changes I've noticed is the difference in how passers-by react to it: at the time of the "before" image people would just keep on going by without so much as breaking stride.  nowdays they're much more likely to pause for a bit of a look.

to my own mind it will improve even more when the upper front window gets replaced, the trim around it is reapplied and that level's paint matches the rest.

By the way, what does your front sign say? All I can make out is "______ cottage."

same as the userpic ... or see entry for 2 October 2005 (http://www.livejournal.com/~15_the_circle/2005/10/02) re: the dedication.

I will have to go back into your journal archive to see if I can answer the question that I want to ask before I actually ask it.
