dedication

the day dawned bright and clear, perfect weather for the dedication.  the place was looking its best and while setting up I took a brief moment to capture this image:

before the dedication
before the dedication

at eight bells on the ship's clock guests gathered in the Circle and the masking over the sign came off at last:

bittersweet cottage

it's official, the place now has a name, one that works on multiple levels.

Wow! Lots has happened since I went to China for two weeks! I realize the 2nd story window is still in process but I like the contrast of the grey house body(ties in the porch floor) up there with the russet color of the wood beside the windows- looks like shutters in the photo. Ties in well with the terra cotta pots and chairs and compliments the lower scheme. Keep eyes open for those "happy accidents." The house can handle it. T.

the upper front is going to stay the way it is for a while longer.  like the lower sides, it went through a striking chromatic shift within 14 hr of the shingles coming off -- as first revealed it was a pale yellow, which then faded to a sort of creamy beige.  over the ensuing weeks it has been taking on a grey aspect.  it will be interesting to see what it does over the next few months.

I don't know enough about the chemistry of the older paints (presumably a linseed oil base) to understand the process.

the wood-and-wicker chairs on the porch are from my great aunt's cottage in Maine.  I had always considered them as indoor furniture but as soon as they went onto the porch for the dedication I realized they had come into their own.  other than during inclement weather they are now porch furniture.
