for best results: mix and match

The best commutes I've ever had have been when I could take the train to work, or could bike there. Each mode has its advantages, but they have shared the same drawback: the opportunity cost of having to give up the other.
This is no longer a problem. Since the Capital Bikeshare system got started it is now possible to start in the Grove, take the MARC train downtown and then complete the journey by bike.
More people than not seem to dread the commute to work, I actually look forward to it.
Interestingly enough, for that last leg through urban traffic cycling is hands-down faster than any combination of subway, automobile, bus and walking. The only way to beat it would be with a personal jetpack.

The service is pretty new and the bikes are too. I haven't yet had to report a bike for mechanical problems though yesterday one of the stations was acting up when I was checking out a bike. In the end it worked and later on when I called the support number to report the problem they said they'd send a technician over there right away..
The self-service model and ability to do short-term one-way rentals, along with reasonable density of locations, is what really makes it work. This cool online status map is a handy tool and of course there are smartphone apps for it too.
