as expected, further excavation of the N wall shows that under the shingles under the falsework under the shingles is the original planking in its original colour.  at present the plan is to leave the framing for the falsework in place, at least temporarily, whilst removing inner and outer layers of shingles in the hopes of determining why it's there.  since the two tension members secured to it are presumably holding up the house, I'm in no hurry to do anything that might impair its structural integrity until it can be looked at by a competent builder or engineer.
