now this is most unusual
based on the 1905 photo showing the North wall as blind I was sufficiently encouraged to go ahead and start taking off more shingles. if any unexpected windows or door would appear, it would take this phase of the activity beyond reasonable bounds of scope. and cost. didn't particularly note at first that these shingles are wider and of a cheaper grade of material than the ones removed from around the corner on the front.
first surprise: there's plywood behind them. this is Not Good.
second surprise: prying a bit of it back at the top level and peering with a flashlight, what's behind it is ... nothing. wtf?
oh, that's right, that segment is above the join of the top of the wall with the roofline.third surprise: taking a similar look further down, what's behind the shingles is ... another wall. with more shingles. older ones. wtf?
OK, so what they did was build falsework a few inches outside from the existing wall and then cover it with newer shingles. one wonders what they were trying to protect. or conceal.
ran out of daylight before learning anything else, and there's rain forecast for tomorrow. an inch of it. this means the trim carpenter won't be showing up, which is all right because at this point I'm not really ready for him. so next chance to get any further will be Saturday.
