[OT from cottage renovations]

the new bird feeder has been working out quite well, attracting birds but not accommodating squirrels.

Bittersweet Cottage garden

in addition to the goldfinches and chickadees, today this downy woodpecker showed up.  it had no interest in sharing the resource with the other two species and a certain amount of aggressive fluttering and chirping -- and a few flying feathers -- settled matters more to its satisfaction than to theirs.
