new tech

[OT from cottage renovations]

mixed results were obtained from the relocation of the thistle feeder from back to front a few weeks ago.  I was pleased to see goldfinches and chickadees making use of it but considerably less pleased to find squirrels doing the same.

the previous feeder, rendered unusable by squirrel damage, has been replaced with this new model.  it hangs under a baffle cone at the end of a long (~24 ft.) cable attached to a branch that's higher than the ridgepole.  the lower end of the cable is still looped because the placement is provisional; it will be finished off properly if the location turns out to be suitable.

feeder tech

it generally takes the birds a couple of days or so to start using a new feeder so it's too early to tell whether it or the protective measures are working out.

Squirrels may be destructive little bastards, but I have to admire them... they are terribly clever!

All the same, I hope the anti-squirrel measures do the trick in this case.
