exterior deshinglement moves to the S wall and comes to a halt

there haven't been any updates over the past week because not much has happened.  the carpenters had planned to return but didn't make it back.  in their absence I had continued with removing the wallboard and styrofoam layers from the front room interior.

having cleared the S wall interior about as far back as the N wall had been cleared I then decided to start with exterior deshinglement to assess the condition of the corresponding outer wall.  other than a swath about a metre wide, the shape it's in is: missing
this does not come as a surprise: the N wall is sheltered from the elements by the porch overhang and doesn't get much direct sunlight, but the S wall is exposed to both so its material would be less likely to have remained in decent shape.

this has had two direct consequences:

  • the outer wall will need to have those two runs of plywood replaced with random width TIG planking to match the bit that's still there.
  • its insulation and vapor barrier can be applied from the outside rather than the inside, limiting the disturbance to the interior.

disappointing as it was to run out of stenchy material inside the walls, it was inevitable that it would happen.  as layers are opened up, the idea is to preserve what's good and replace what isn't.  this plywood falls into the latter category.
