[OT from cottage renovations]

this afternoon I followed my steps back to the scene of yesterday's images to catch a different light.

it's a long way to Pad 39A down at the Cape, to Kourou or to the Baikonur Cosmodrome.  but looking at this frail craft poised for launch, the difference seems one of scale rather than of kind.

common name

Canada Thistle.
but just to keep things confusing, (1) it's not from Canada, and (2) it is also known also as California Thistle, Corn Thistle, Creeping Thistle, Cursed Thistle, Green Thistle, Hard Thistle, Perennial Thistle, Prickly Thistle, Small-flowered Thistle, and Way Thistle.  perhaps you already have made its acquaintance by one of these other names.

This is a great photo. I love the thistle taking off, the warm yellow foreground and the blurry greens in the background.
Isn't it funny, I think to myself, this so far is my favorite of all the photos you have posted and it is not of a flower but a weed!

thanks, glad you liked it.
weeds and invasives get featured all the time so long as they do something interesting with composition or light.

entries in this space are location tagged but for the past few months I've been including common and scientific names in image tags.  they don't show up on the newly redecorated front page but see instead the image tag cloud (http://pics.livejournal.com/tools/tagcloud?user=15_the_circle) (kinda nifty -- size indicates frequency and you can hover your mouse over a tag to see which ones are associated).  plenty of weeds in that list.

Wow, that tag cloud is something else. Almost enough to make me get a paid account.
You gave the link this time....is that site available somewhere on your daily posts? I see it over here on the side of this one. I'll look the next time I go to your journal.

the image hosting makes a paid LJ account a pretty good deal.  tagging images (as opposed to posts) is something I've only gotten around to doing in the past few months; at some point I should get around to back tagging the 1½ years worth of previous images.  also for some reason it hadn't occurred to me that it worked other than for one's account while signed in else I might have played with it -- and been more diligent about tags -- sooner.  it was easy to add it to this page style's layout so it should always be there (unless you read these posts from your flist).

playing with page layout and style is another recent affectation.  I had kept it pretty minimal for the benefit of a visually handicapped friend whose only internet access is through screen reading software and a speech synthesiser.  but recent experiments with layout alternates were encouraging so I went ahead and redecorated in order to include the page summary and entry tag list.

Yeah, there is so much here you can do if you are inclined. As it is I barely keep up with reading my friends posts, commenting sometimes and posting some photos now and then. It's funny when I started a few years ago.....I didn't even have a computer.....[livejournal.com profile] duccio kept telling me to get one and I finally did. Then he gave me a camera and now I know how to enter photos, and do a little html, not much, but something.
Customizing my journal may come up at some point.
