based on the weathering of its materials this section of retaining wall appeared to have been built shortly before the hurricane. it is all that remains of this homesite.
it was convenient to sit on while eating lunch.

as more cabinets were installed the garage staging area began to open up. in the late afternoon the coordinator backed up a trailer for us to unload: appliances.

a replacement water heater is already on site. until the house electrical and plumbing systems pass inspection it's a bit premature to hook any of them up, but that can be seen to by following crews.
later on he [the coordinator] told us that depending on who shows up, the place can be completed by, as he put it, "one fast crew or two normal speed ones." the family has been out of this home for 2½ years now.

before our departure the kids made up this poster and hung it in the lunch preparation room for the benefit of later volunteer groups.

still to follow: with the day free we found our own roots, saw some of the Gulf Coast and visited New Orleans.

learning in conversation that we came from a former camp meeting community, our hosts suggested that we might like to head a few miles up the road to look around the one in their area.

another floor treatment now open to the sky.
the brick fireplace seems unnaturally cheerful.
this vault and massive door seem to have survived. the rest of the structure (a bank?) doesn't seem to have made it.
the arts community is alive and well and is doing its part to cheer up residents and visitors alike.
