learning in conversation that we came from a former camp meeting community, our hosts suggested that we might like to head a few miles up the road to look around the one in their area.

like the Grove in its early years, the camp was laid out with tents surrounding a large open air wooden tabernacle.  here in the Grove a similar wooden structure once occupied the centre of what is now the Circle.

check out the mod cons: electric lights and ceiling fans.

as one would expect in a camp meeting community, the structures are rustic, intended to fit into their setting rather than to dominate it, and started out as tents, evolving over time to their current forms.  cottages are named rather than numbered: these ones retain the tent designations.

in a warmer climate roofs are lower but the front porches are just as useful.  with cottages abutting one another the overhang is continuous.

ripply old glass helped us feel right at home.

for luck

the camp meeting runs in October so the place will be quiet for a few more months.  it wasn't completely deserted, though: the air was filled with carpenter bees (just like home) and these burrowers were digging up the ground.
