I've never quite understood how or why it is that the children's recital is Music Weekend's only sparsely attended event.  for me it's the highlight, and my appreciation for it deepens over the years.  it is such a pleasure to see the way in which their musical interests and abilities develop over time.  I wouldn't miss it, not for anything.

if you weren't there, here's what you missed.

an accidental omission from this year's event (it made the printed program but got overtaken by the rush of events) was the traditional closing rounds, sung by the audience under the direction of the children.  I'm sure they'll be back come next year:

All things shall perish from under the sky.
Music alone shall live, music alone shall live,
Music alone shall live, never to die.

when the performances were finished, the music didn't stop.  Sita and Julia were working on a new arrangement:

it gave me the chance to try something that's not possible during a performance, which is to play with the reflections in the instrument's surface.

I looked --eagerly -- but it was empty.
later I found out it was to be used for drawing names for a prize.  oh, well.

Grove kids are no less rambunctious than any others.  but there was no fidgeting; they were all quite attentive to each performance.  I'm not sure our grownups would do any better.

it was Rory who figured out that performers had been given weapons-grade roses.

in the evening Gypsy Meltdown provided the music and contra dancing broke out in the Town Hall.

the lighting was subdued, which improved the event for participants but also made imagery even more challenging than usual.  that's completely as it should be.  I often get quite concerned about the intrusiveness of taking pictures during Grove events; having a visual record may be A Good Thing in its own right but capturing images should always be subordinate to the activity itself.  the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle as applied to the Grove, as it were.

well, O.K., that's it for yesterday.  it's time to head off to the  Baroque  Brass Band Breakfast over at the Gazebo.

here's an image that didn't make the original cut for the entry about this year's School Bus Attack, though just barely.  the bamboo walker dropped by; on seeing it she encouraged me to relent.
