morning light and texture combine to bring out an image of a tree in this leaf of a late stage Virginia bluebell.

the opium poppy isn't quite finished. it's already had a great deal of exposure in this space but this head-on view was beyond my power to resist.

the azaleas are, for the most part, past their peak but are still quite impressive. this one lost many of its petal tubes during last night's rain but the long stems remain.

rhododendrons are for me, like tulips, something that takes an effort to appreciate. taxonomically they are the same as azaleas of which I am so fond, so clearly the difference has no logical basis -- but what prejudice ever does?
as with so much else I find the incipient stage more appealing. here are a couple of examples.

this cluster puts me in the mind of those beautifully wrapped packages from department stores in Japan.
this bud shows a thematic element common to pine cones, artichokes, pineapples and the Chrysler building.

when light and texture are out there to play with even the honeysuckle gets in on the act. I had spent part of the morning clearing some of it from the Circle where it (along with Virginia creeper, something that I'm probably misidentifying as a form of sumac, barberry and the persistently abundant poision ivy) were crowding out a few of the azaleas. this one, on private property, had nothing to fear from me.
