Jack's fate

[OT from cottage renovations]

it's that time of year again, when jack-o-lantern meets ritual mutilation at the hands (and worse) of squirrels.  this year's sacrificial victim maintains a remarkable aplomb as the disgusting chain of events begins.  I've seen it before and believe me, it ain't pretty.

light and leaf

[OT from cottage renovations]

leaf and light continue to provide a high level of distraction in the Circle.

overwintering plants

the Grove has already had a couple of frosts so potted and hanging plants have come in for the winter.

the begonias were still in bloom and I didn't have it in me to leave them out to freeze so in they came, window box and all.  the kitchen has a sunny S window in which I set the whole thing.  both ends overhang the counter but it does work.

the large split leaf fern spent spring, summer and fall out on the rear deck where it could be out of the way of all the construction activity.  it did quite well out there and is now quite massive.  it's now in the front room, which it completely dominates.

as plants come in, the bulbs go out for a long winter's underground nap.  this auger is a good tool for the job but care is needed in its use -- it puts a heavy short term load on the electric drill's motor.
