yesterday: slowing down
[OT from cottage renovations]
when I upgraded from automobile dependency one aspect that I found surprising was how I found I was seeing more, not less of the world. given the lower speed and cruising range perhaps more of less would be a better way of putting it. it has given me opportunities to take note of things that I surely would have missed from conventional transport.
it turns out that the same relation holds when one makes a modal switch to walking. while out on an errand yesterday I ended up making the County's roads safer by removing a metal staple from the pavement with my rear tire. for close in trips (within a couple of miles of the Grove) I don't bother to bring along tools and spare tubes; on a beautiful spring day the unexpected opportunity for a roadside walk provided a closer look at these blossoms which I would have otherwise whizzed right on past without a glance.

Shady Grove Road
Solanum ptycanthum
Eastern Black Nightshade shares the margin between Shady Grove Road and Interstate 370 with the usual invasives: lots of honeysuckle and multiflora rose. the disturbance occasioned by road building is said to be a boon for these opportunistic species. it certainly seems to be so.
