at the end of the last day out here we dined in a place whose location offers a convergence of sea, sunset and the  Union  Southern Pacific Coast Line.

(I snapped a photo last night of one of the engines here that says "Southern Pacific". I'm not sure if all logos were changed but this one looked quite beat up and worn out.)

• the Southern Pacific was  merged into the Union Pacific  assimilated into the Borg more than ten years ago, so whatever they haven't gotten around to repainting or scrapping is looking pretty ratty by now.  yes, they own it, so they can rename it and repaint it, and even mess with mileposts and timetable direction all they want.  but it will always be the Southern Pacific. 
• I have come to know a thing or two about mergers: sometimes the jackals really do take down nobler beasts.  I'm sorry that I never, ahem, officially worked there. 
• this space so needs an SP icon (that, at least, I can make happen).
