A.P.S.

OT from cottage renovations

(click through these thumbnails for higher resolution images)

the day started overcast and stayed that way, which kept things cool -- good weather for moving things about and doing runs to the dump.

the sun finally managed to burn through the coastal fog layer in the late afternoon, so after we were finished for the day there was a chance to set out for a walk in the sweetlight.

Alameda Padre Serra

... has a pretty Spanish name, inconsistent with yanqui haste so locals abreviate it down to A.P.S.  it runs along the a hillside at enough of a slope that in some spots its lanes are divided and vertically separated in order to fit within the right of way.

nopal cactus translucence
Opunta

this Nopal (prickly pear) cactus was glowing with late afternoon translucence.

bouganvillea

the same light was streaming through these bouganvillea, showing up the sort of detail one would normally think it would take some sort of X-ray imaging setup to see.

afternoon sun on stone retaining wall

over its edges and down the slope where most users can't see the detail, the road often features retaining walls with beautiful stonework dating back to the 1920s.

lily

click through this thumbnail and let the more detailed image of this while lily fill your screen.  then, just look at it for a while.  you'll see lots of detail, though much of it is subtle.

I see that little ant.

You make such beautiful photos. I hope you're enjoying your time out west.

thank you for taking the time to look through.  the undersized pollinator is the beginning, but then the destination is inward rather than outward.

thank you for your kind words.  "enjoying" isn't quite the word I would use, for this is a working trip, and a non-revenue one at that.  but it's all stuff that has to be done, that should have been gotten to long before, and each step forward represents some incremental progress.  if I can focus on that rather than on the amount still needing to be done, i'll be that much better off.

Well, I did catch the references to the "dump." Which seems odd to read in a sentence with Santa Barbara in it also.

There is a certain satisfaction that comes when the list of "things to do" becomes smaller. Day by day. At least you're getting out in the evenings with your camera. We're thankful for that. And you'll be home soon. Your kitty is missing you!

solid waste management has to happen everywhere, even here.  last trip and this one my brother and I have done a great deal of triage which has led to many dump runs as well as to many donations to thrift stores and to Habitat for Humanity.  today was actually the first day we've had without even one run to the dump; an encouraging milestone.

yes, that is true, and we have to take (or generate) that gratification wherever we can, even though what we're doing is, in the words of the Excellent (and long-missing) Trim Carpenter, "whittling away at an iceberg".

I'm happy that you have been enjoying the images from here.  Santa Barbara seems in many ways to be its own little world.  there are good things about that and perhaps some other ones too, but one aspect can never be denied: the place sure is photogenic.

I do not doubt for a moment that both of the  monsters  kitties are missing me.  last trip out was the first time I had been away for more than a couple of nights since Meg first came.  this trip is shorter than that one but I am sure she will be quite pleased to have her human back.  perhaps having the Alaskans around for a week will make up at least in part for the enexcused absence of her domestic staff.

Peake will also be pleased though he is too much of a Cool Cat to be overly expressive.  gotta maintain that detachment, daddy-o.
