roadside
[OT from cottage renovations]
this year's early advent of the time change meant after we knocked off there was a chance to catch some local plants in late afternoon light.

the bottle brush trees have come into bloom in my brother's garden.
Callistemon
down the road and around the corner from his place is a stand of California poppies of which I had taken note in the morning. by late afternoon the light was falling on them in a way that was suitable for a study.
Eschscholzia californica
what may not be obvious from these images is that the background is asphalt pavement; in order to take them I was standing in a (dry) drainage ditch with cars going past within a couple of feet. whenever composing an image entails doing something that makes me look like a complete idiot, I never hesitate.
the fronds of this palm presented a light-and dark, mass-and-curlicue contrast that was worth lying down on the roadside to capture.
I don't have much power of resistance against the attraction of succulents of any size. when light is flowing through them it drops to zero.

that makes two of us. it would be embarrassing to admit how much digichrome I actually burned on them. let's just say there are plenty more where those came from.

Is the Callistemon also called Bottle Brush? They are so interesting.

yes, it is.
