[OT from cottage renovations]

today's high might have made it up to that 32°f freeze point.  or maybe it didn't.  either way, the wind didn't let up so it was colder than I would have liked though nowhere near as bad as yesterday's cut-to-the-bone superchilled cemetery wind.

over the past few days I have been in a running shoot/discard/reshoot cycle involving this one boxwood.  it's an excellent specimen, taller than I am.  with these images I'm going to declare victory, however unearned, upload and move on.

Buxus sempervirens*

these incipient buds, though partly showing, are staying tightly -- and sensibly -- wrapped against snow, ice, wind and cold.  at some point when conditions are more favourable their development will continue.  until then I'm just going to have to wait.

Everywhere I look, I'm seeing the same sort of thing around here — closed buds that seem poised to open the moment enough warmth seeps into the soil.

I'll look forward to more photos when the buds are open!

that seems so very far away when the cold, seasonal though it is, sets in like this.  but there is light, reliably clear this time of year, and I will make an effort to go out in it to see what may be revealed.

however persistent the cold, the buds provide a reminder of what is to follow.
