warning

[OT from cottage renovations]

it's a safe bet that reading this journal constitutes non-essential computer use -- it's hard to imagine anything more inessential.  that could be a problem, according to this BBC report on a Stanford University study of internet addiction Problematic Internet use.

you have been warned.

Wow. How odd.

I spend hours on the computer, but not for any of the reasons they list as warning signs. I was offline for a couple of weeks when our hub wasn't working, but only missed it for the stuff I desperately needed to do. But yes, now that it's up again, I'll admit I stare at the screen far more than I should.

Addicted or not addicted? This is a difficult question!

I have been getting some baseline measurements but the process hasn't been much fun:
last week the DSL line dropped to slower-than-slow for a few days during which I noted an unusual increase in telephone company service truck activity the Grove.  I wasted a couple of days checking out everying attached to the cottage wiring and concluded that it was a C&P Telephone Bell Atlantic Verizon problem -- a real nuisiance because it's such a [colourful expression] to deal with their "service" desk -- but after a while the trucks went away and the connection went back to normal on its own; God was in his heaven and all was well with the world.

but for the past couple of days it's slowed back down to a crawl, only this time there haven't been any trucks about so I am not counting on a spontaneous remission.

internet withdrawal.  it ain't pretty.

... and now it's come back again, just as mysteriously as it had dried up.  one never knows what to expect.
