1491, by Charles G. Mann, looks at America before us white folks arrived, and pulls together a lot of recent archeological work to paint a quite different picture of the indigenous inhabitants of the Americas.
Mann is a science writer who does a very good job of pulling everything together in a convincing and very readable way. Having majored in Latin American history, I was familiar with some of his sources, and I thought he did an excellent job of summarizing the archeological record.
