[OT from cottage renovations]
first off, read this fascinating talk: Gin, Television, and Social Surplus (at 2,502 words it won't take long).
the TV sink is consuming brainpower from many intelligent and and talented people of my acquaintance. a few of them can't even get themselves past the gin trap. but consider this: the internet over which you are reading this is a nearly unbounded connector of people and information, and therefore of ideas: the best tool in quite some time for seeing just what human curiosity can produce. like TV it can -- and does -- contain a truly astonishing amount of crap, but since content can be under user rather than producer control we have the ability to do with it what we wish.
it's easy to find others with whom one shares any interest, no matter how obscure, and information on just about any topic that might engage one's attention. it's similarly easy to collaborate with others to extend what is known or to produce something new.
why don't I watch TV?
I don't have the time.
there's too much else going on and I'm already not able to keep up with as much of it as I would like.
