[OT from cottage renovations]
you wouldn't know it from reading typical posts in this space but yes, there really is a world out there past the edges of the Grove and yes, some of it can be rather nice.
for those in search of an out-of-the-Grove experience, one locale that's worth looking into is the Inn out of the Fog in Bear River, Nova Scotia. it's not a former camp meeting community, the railroad doesn't run there any more (though I did take advantage of the opportunity to ride through before they ripped up the tracks, but that's another story); but for a chance to get away from much of what ails the modern world you'll have a hard time doing any better.
local (which is to say, Maryland) legend has it that Annapolis Royal, up the peninsula from Bear River, was one of the sites to which Marylanders who had remained loyal to the Crown were invited to relocate following the American revolution, there being plenty of room in those parts because a previous round of ethnic cleansing had moved francophone Acadians to the colony of Louisiana (where the name became corrupted to "Cajun"). I'm not sure how many actually went there but it makes a good story, one that would be easier to believe if Nova Scotians had taken up the Charm City habit of calling people "Hon".
