[OT from cottage renovations]

today's forecast: "Gusty winds.  Clear and very cold.  Low 5°f.  High 15°f. "

this is as cold as it ever gets around here.  even with the sun out the cottage heating apparatus has taken most of the day to get the front room up to 58°f.  the rest of the place -- down the thermal gradient -- is, uh, less warm. 

it will be a relief when the next couple of days sees the temperatures back up in the 20s (a part of me can't believe I just typed that sentence).

today's sunlight, streaming down through a clear sky, must have done something to help the temperature.  it didn't feel like it was, but then as soon as the sun went down the effect became notable by its absence.  nonetheless I did set out in the afternoon to see what might be found in the fading light.

better living through electricity: this pond is equipped with a pump to recirculate the water and, it would appear, a heater to help maintain an opening for air.  it seemed odd to walk past to the sound of running water.
