[OT from cottage renovations]

there's little point in enumerating the reasons for a week's delay between taking images and posting them in this space.  sometimes it just happens.

afternoon light brings out the iridescence and texture of this caul.  I have admired many beautiful art deco pieces whose fine craftsmanship sought to bring forth these qualities but this original surpasses them all.

Memorial Grove, Howard Park

these adornments appeared on one of the trees in the Memorial Grove, a pleasing mix of the natural and the artificial.  like many acts of non-so-random kindness and senseless beauty that happen in the Grove, I suspect it to be the work of the Time Travelers.

the fields to the SE of the Grove have lain fallow since the property was conveyed to a developer, during which time opportunistic plant invaders have been doing their best to turn it into something else.  thickets and overgrowth, with shelter for trees which if they can poke through the low canopy (still only a metre or two high) would transform into scrub woods with undergrowth.  one need not expect the process to get very far along in that direction before the earthmoving equipment shows up to begin the grading and scraping that will undo it all in the name of progress.  and profits.

sapling and vine are locked here in struggle, with sharp thorns to poke and twisting tendrils to choke; one that both will lose because their efforts are directed at each other without regard to the nature and source of the real threat they both face.

if we are fortunate, a part of one of the fields (though none of the woods) might be retained as legacy open space.  exactly how that might work out is presently a matter of some local controversy.

these blossoms are now in the past tense but haven't lost any of their appeal to me.
