the midafternoon light was clear and quite intense but softened as the day began to run out.

the intense backlight on this dafodil imparted a glow to the inner portion of this bloom; despite the inevitable washing out of the outer petal details I was rather taken with the effect on the inner ones.

having turned to follow the sun this one came around to an attractive viewing angle.

the genius of forsythia is not only that of abundant brilliant blooms, but also its timing, coming as it does ahead of so much else in the garden and neighbourhood.  though it is at its best in massive array, the details of smaller scale are fascinating in their own right, well, at least to me they are.

the cluster of buds on the tip of this stalk loom over the garlanded branch like the eagles on the standards of Roman legions.
