as I had hoped, over the weekend I was able to clear out the remaining wallboard and styrofoam from the base of the N wall. this entailed temporary removal of the baseboard and revealed the rest of the heating duct that had been embedded in the wall.
why a duct?
better yet, with both walls cleared down to floor level it was possible to do some vacuuming and straightening up in the room. gypsum dust and styrofoam fragments make one heck of a mess. it took me a while to figure out that sweeping up the former is a better technique for spreading it around than for cleaning it up: best bet is to disturb it as little as possible and go after it with a vacuum cleaner.
