I don't get up this way very often, but with each renewed acquaintance what impresses me the most is how the Hudson seems to have more attitude than other rivers.  I don't know whether it's the strong current, the brisk interaction with ever-present wind or what it does to light:  whatever the factors are, they combine to give it a very different look and feel. 

earthyshadow asked for some pictures from the train.  this isn't much of one, and the dirty window glass and glare didn't help it any, but what is desired to be conveyed is the mood: strident, hurried, forceful.  I'm hoping it does that, at least to some extent.

to travel North is to travel back in time, getting ahead of the change of season. 

obvious signs of spring had run out before the train made it to New Jersey.  coming up the river the lingering snow piles heaped up by plowing became noticeable, first the grimy shade of deep rot, replaced as one got further north by white.  along the banks stray ice cakes could sometime be seen, snagged before they could wash out to sea. 
making the turn at Albany and heading West along the shallow valley of the Mohawk the slopes and hollows are holding onto their pockets of snow, accumulated weeks ago when it drifted in on the wind but not yet melted out.

this image didn't make the cut for this space, but warm brickwork in the afternoon sunlight was kind of appealing so I posted it to the doorwindowwall and itsinthedetails communities.
