S wall - what really happened

as I headed out yesterday morning the exterior residing of the S wall was underway and I was expecting that by day's end it would be complete, or substantially so.

the milled planks did come out well.  the back sides are being set on the outside in order to provide a bit of visible texture (part of "building old").  here they are, stacked on the porch and ready to be cut to length and set in place:

by now I really should know better than to sustain such expectations.

on getting home, once again as dusk was running out, the initial sight was not very encouraging.  the wall was once again covered with black plastic sheeting, and although the supply of milled TIG planks had diminished, it was now accompanied by some framing lumber.  uh oh

clearly the wall, when opened up, had revealed some framing or structural issues.  of course having the wall's interior exposed for some other reason presents a wonderful opportunity to address whatever else is going on in there, but it's not the sort of thing one wants to find during the last steps of the current phase of work.

since the visible difference was minimal I didn't see any point in taking and uploading any images.

taking a fresh look Saturday morning it was possible to see a bit more of what's going on.  behind the black plastic, half of the new exterior is in place (5¾ ft out of 11½ ft total) with insulation in the wall behind it.  there's also a 14 ft piece of 1x8 to be cut down for the lower bandboard.

the carpenter had been talking about taking some days off this (coming) week for a fishing trip to the Outer Banks.  I don't know whether he'll be back to the job before then.
